In the US, the cost of treatment, lost productivity, and related mortality from food poisoning is $55.5 billion per year. Between 2004 and 2015, US FDA related product recalls doubled to 659 per year, and each recall averaged $9 million in costs for food manufacturers. Senoptica will help prevent a major cause of foodborne illness on the most commonly eaten foods.

Senoptica has developed a ground-breaking sensor that can noninvasively detect the level of oxygen – the best indicator available – in an active pack.

The sensor is created by printing a patent-pending ink formulation directly into the packaging. The sensor enables packs to be accepted or rejected based on the specification for the product being packed. Every pack produced will have been verified before leaving the packing line.

As the sensor is printed into the packaging it can be scanned with a handheld device at any point in the supply chain, generating real-time integrity results, through the entire life of the pack. The results can be sent to or received from the cloud, filing a gap for food traceability systems like IBM Foodtrust.
