Despite software engineers’ critical importance, one-in-five will leave their job in the next 12 months at a cost of $250,000 to the company. It takes 2.5 years to regain the lost knowledge and, even when the engineers stay, sub-optimal performance leads to 30 per cent lower output for these teams. Tribal is a data company using scientifically backed psychology metrics to measure software engineers’ engagement. This supports managers in identifying personnel issues faster and more accurately than their human intuition.
Tribal has developed and proven an online assessment platform, backed up by scientific research and complex algorithms, to collate psychological data on software engineers’ task engagement. The data is made accessible to the company in the form of detailed dashboards to help identify engagement issues for individuals or within teams.
The solution has minimal impact on the engineers’ time, yet provides a continuous assessment of software engineers’ satisfaction levels, for both current and historical time periods. In completed trials we have demonstrated greater accuracy in comparison to managers, when assessing team members’ states of mind. Up to 20 per cent of engineers were found to be at risk, unbeknownst to their manager.
